A travel guide to Aspen, the ultimate winter wonderland

As far as ski destinations go, they don’t get much better than Aspen. As well as being a playground for the rich and famous and one of the world's premier ski destinations, there's a huge food and wine culture, shopping, bars, clubs, and spas.

Originally a silver mining town home to more than 30,000 people, this sprawling metropolis is bursting with soul and locals who are proud of its history. Its vibrant cultural fabric also includes the arts - supported by the museum and Opera House. Throw in four massive mountains which cater for every level of skier and you have the perfect winter playground.

Where to stay in Aspen

You‘ll want to stay in Aspen town centre so you’re a part of the super fun nightlife and Hotel Jerome is the place to be. Dating back to the 1800s, it’s one of the oldest establishments in town. It has recently been completely refurbished and while it is now an extremely luxurious hotel, it still has that olden day feel.

The rooms are generous and the lobby bars are always bustling with skiers and locals as the evening draws near. The J-Bar has been a favourite local hang out since the hotel opened and its history is remarkable. The burgers are also among the best in town so make sure you grab a seat at the bar, order yourself a burger and have a chat to one of the bartenders about its amazing past.

Where to eat in Aspen

In Aspen, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to dining options. The town prides itself on its culinary class and there are plenty of internationally renowned chefs represented. With a décor you’d expect to find on the high-end streets of London, The Monarch is a steakhouse which will impress. Entre is an experience with choices like; Table Side Caesar (prepared as it sounds at your table), Hudson Valley Foie Gras and King Crab Legs. For main it’s steak all the way with eight prime cuts to choose from plus one ridiculously good burger.

Where to unwind in Aspen

After a few days of skiing, you’ll definitely be in need of a massage for those aches and pains. There’s only so much a hot tub can do! There are plenty of options in Aspen, however, the Remede Spa at the St Regis on E Dean Street is the standout. Unfortunately, everyone knows this so you must book well in advance to make sure you don’t miss out. Try to request Christopher – he has some of the best hands in the business.

What to do when you're not skiing in Aspen

It’s easy to go on a skiing holiday and only ski, however, there are often so many other things which should be experienced. If you’re in Aspen and you can drag yourself away from the mountain for half a day the snowmobile tours operated by T-Lazy-7 Ranch are an absolute must. The guides are excellently informed and you’ll get to drive your own snowmobile out to the breathtaking backcountry. The three-hour lunchtime tour is the best as you also get to stop at a beautiful log cabin where your guides will cook lunch. On the menu is a burger (of course!) made fresh from the ranch’s own cattle. It’s a burger that rivals the J-Bar and The Monarch.
